When is the Best Time to Replace Shocks and Struts
As we all know, shocks and struts are the main part of your air suspension system that allows your vehicle to be balanced and perfectly connected to the road. They are quite reliable parts in the whole suspension system, but, they have to be changed after some time.
Now, most of the experts actually recommend replacing shocks and struts every 50,000 to 100,000 miles. However, that is just a general information. The best way to know when to replace your shocks and struts is to follow a specific maintenance schedule that every vehicle has.
Since the life of your best off road shocks and struts mainly depends on your driving patters, you would be able to have a general picture when to replace them. On the other hand, you can always contact the experts and get them to check your shocks and struts and give you the best opinion.
Our 10 Picks of Best Shocks and Struts
When it comes to choosing the best shock absorbers in the market, things get a little difficult. There are a lot of brands and models but the question is, how many of those have the quality that you can look up to? The answer is ‘a few ones’, and to make things easier for you I’ve compiled the top 10 in this list here.
Bilstein 5100 Monotube Gas Shock Set – A Complete Package
The very first one in this list is a set of monotube gas shocks from Bilstein. You can count on this 5100 Monotube Gas Shock Set to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride.

Features & Specifications
- Weight: 22.5 lbs
- Product Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 30 inches
- Quantity: Set of 4 Shocks
- Position: Front
The build quality of the Bilstein 5100 Monotube Gas Shock Set is definitely something that ensures durability. The reinforced external body is made with high-quality materials so that it can perform with its utmost potential to withstand heavy pressure.
This shock set doesn’t only stand out in terms of durability but in terms of longevity too. According to the manufacturing brand Bilstein, these particular shocks will be your reliable companion for 100k miles! Considering the fact that the standard lifespan is somewhere between 50k to 100k, this is pretty much the most you’ll get.
When do we call something complete? Of course when it has pretty much everything you need or has the capability to meet all your requirements. Speaking of which, this shock set here is the perfect example of that. Things like washers, nuts, and bushings come in a package with this set.
You must’ve figured out from the name that the shocks in this set are monotube. The thing about monotube shocks is that they are good for instant breaking. This is definitely a significant upper hand if you drive high-speed cars and if you often go on off-road journeys.
Another specialty is, these monotube gas shocks can respond very quickly with their 46mm digressive piston. When the pressure falls on the suspension system, these shocks can efficiently convert the kinetic energy to heat and quickly dissipate that into the air.
With this set of shocks, you’ll get a w/2 inch front Lift and 0-1 inch rear lift for your vehicle but only if you have 4WD vehicles. Otherwise, you may face compatibility issues.
Monroe Load Adjusting Shocks u0026amp; Struts
Although all the shock absorber’s purpose is to ensure a smooth journey and stable control, some specific and special models are designed to serve more than just the common purpose. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, this Monroe Load Adjusting Shocks & Struts fall into that special category.

Features & Specifications
- Weight: 11.5 lbs
- Product Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 10 inches
- Quantity: 2 x Shocks
- Position: Front or Back
Speaking of specialties, the sag of these particular shocks and struts are adjustable. You can adjust the shocks based on the load you’re carrying in your vehicle. The sag reduces if the overall weight goes up to 1200 lbs or above. I would recommend always keeping the load 100/200 lbs below the capacity. The extended length of the shock is 24.840 inches and the collapsed length is 15.540 inches.
The build of these shocks has Nitrocarburized rod that can save the whole suspension system from any kind of damage. With these rods, you don’t need to worry about any rust or wearing off due to rain or dust. Also, there is a self-lubricating fluid seal to prevent gas leakage and excessive friction.
When you’re driving on a bumpy road, the tires fall into different potholes and uneven surfaces. That’s where these shocks come in. The fully-displaced valving and the practically designed suspension of the shocks allow them to maintain the ride height properly.
Sudden shock fade or shock failure can result in something really serious if the situation is not on your side. That’s why this pair of monotube shocks comes with Nitrogen gas to avoid something like that. Pressurized Nitrogen gas has no build-up or bubbles that decrease the efficiency.
There is also an all-weather fluid that allows the suspension system to perform efficiently pretty much in all weathers. Altogether, I wouldn’t second guess before calling it one of the best shocks for pickup trucks or similar vehicles

A Quick Comparison
Between the Bilstein 5100 Vs The Monroe Shocks
Now that we’ve got all the information about the first two shocks in our list, how about we do a quick comparison? This way we’ll get to find out how these two shocks differ from each other.
The Bilstein shocks come as a complete package having all the necessary nuts and bushes that are necessary for attaching them easily. But there isn’t anything like that in the Monroe Load Adjusting Shocks & Struts. You’ll need to buy them separately.
With the Monroe shocks, you’ll be able to adjust the sag that’ll make load carrying comparatively easier. The Bilstein 5100 Gas Shock Set on the other hand can’t be adjusted. It’s a slight drawback but it can function just good enough to maintain the anticipated performance.
Also, both shocks have reliable design and technology to avoid shock failure. The heat dissipation efficiency and the effectiveness of the suspension system are pretty much the same in both dampers.
Detroit Axle Rear Driver u0026amp; Passenger Side Strut
This is one of the best struts that comes from a line of Detroit Axle products that is equipped with lots of different features. Anyhow, this strut is only designed for rear driver and passenger side wheels. In that light, let’s see everything that this strut has to offer.
As we all know, strut is a major part of any suspension system, therefore, this strut surely will maximize the performance of your vehicle. With the high-quality materials and specially designed shape, this strut will absorb most of the bouncing and oscillation during the driving time.

On top of that, this whole package is equipped with strut, coil, and a spring with mounts which enables easy installation process. However, this is only a strut made for Sedan models, but, you can find it quite valuable if you drive one of the Sedan vehicles.

Rough Country N3 Rear Shock Absorbers
The next one on our list is the Rough Country N3 Rear Shock Absorbers. Every single shock in this list has something extra to offer that makes it special. And in this case, that extra something is that these shocks are greatly reliable for rough or bumpy road surfaces.

Features & Specifications
- Weight: 14 lbs
- Product Dimensions: 25.25 x 5.75 x 3 inches
- Quantity: 2 x Rear Shocks
- Position: Rear
An off-road journey means extra pressure on the suspension system. That’s why to cope with this extra pressure these shocks come with an 18 mm chrome hardened piston rod. And of course, these Rough Country N3 Rear Shock Absorbers have a monotube that is equipped with high-pressure Nitrogen gas.
For an efficient suspension system, there is a 35mm piston that tackles the extra pressure by converting the kinetic energy to heat. Speaking of which, these shocks have 36 kN tensile strength. That means each of these shocks has a 36 Kilonewton maximum load capacity.
The 54 mm fast cooling shock body can dissipate the converted heat energy into the air. It’s quite important for a shock absorber that it can dissipate heat as quickly as possible. If it fails to do that, the suspension system gets overheated and that can lead to shock failure.
Gas leaking is another reason behind shock fade or shock failure. To avoid any kind of gas leakage these shocks have spring-loaded piston rod seals.
The Rough Country N3 Rear Shock Absorbers have a 10 stage variable valving. This allows the suspension system to mitigate the imbalance of the car and to keep the control stable when you’re driving off-road. This valving system ensures comfort and a smooth experience on the road.
Last of all, there is a military spec fluid that allows the shocks to perform smoothly even in rough weather. The ordinary suspension system tends to lose its functioning ability if the temperature falls a little. But these N3 Rear Shocks can keep going with their full potential even at -40 degrees celsius.
EBJ Magnetic Front Shock Absorber
The next one is a pair of magnetic shocks from EBJ. EBJ has earned a great reputation over the years for manufacturing quality products with top-notch quality. But the question here is, can this Magnetic Front Shock Absorber live up to the name? Let’s see!

Features & Specifications
- Weight: 52.2 lbs
- Product Dimensions: 25 x 16.5 x 9 inches
- Quantity: 2 x Front Shocks
- Position: Front
This one here is a strut-type shock absorber that comes with great durability. Along with a powerful piston on the inside, it has a coil spring on the outside that is made with chrome silicon. This spring is designed to last longer than any other ordinary steel-made spring.
This EBJ Magnetic Front Shock Absorber is quite different than the other ones on the list. The build isn’t the only thing that makes these shocks special, it’s the magnetic suspension system that is a result of great engineering. This magnetic suspension system alone has taken these shocks to a whole new level.
As you know already, different suspension systems use different fluids or gas as the medium. But this magnetic suspension system’s specialty is that there are a lot of tiny particles along with the fluid that responds to magnets. This fluid is called oil-metal suspension fluid.
In this magnetic suspension system, there is an electromagnetic field inside the piston. When it’s turned on, the particles align with the fluid and make it thicker than usual. That creates more resistance in the flow and as a result, the shock can deal with a lot more pressure than usual.
The thing that I really liked about a magnetic shock absorber is that you can control the damping ratio at your own convenience. You can even control the shocks on each tire separately from your car just by changing the flow of the current and maintaining the voltage.
The shocks balance the car so well that you won’t even feel the difference between a bumpy road and a smooth road. Without any doubt, this is one of the most comfortable shock absorbers.
BuyAutoParts Rear Air Shock Set
All the shock absorbers are entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring a comfortable and smooth journey. To do that the shocks usually have to deal with huge pressure. And that’s why along with a good suspension system you need a durable build just like this BuyAutoParts Rear Air Shock Set.

Features & Specifications
- Weight: 14 lbs
- Product Dimensions: 31 x 14 x 11 inches
- Quantity: 2 x Rear Shocks
- Position: Rear
If your shocks don’t have a durable build, possibility is that the piston rods of the shocks will get twisted or break apart. To avoid something like that, the people at BuyAutoParts haven’t compromised with the build quality at all.
The carbon steel mount in these shocks ensures that they are going to serve you for a long time. Then you’ll see that robotic welds have been used to attach different parts of the shocks. This type of welding is very durable and you rest assured that they won’t come off easily.
The build of this BuyAutoParts Rear Air Shock Set makes sure that you won’t face any shock failure issues out of nowhere. To prevent any kind of leakage of gas or oil bypass there is a leakproof piston seal and rod. The mounts and bushing also meet the OEM specifications because of their high quality.
These shocks have a very efficient suspension system with durable pistons to give you the anticipated results. This suspension system can quickly eliminate the pressure by converting the kinetic energy to heat. The heat dissipation system is also very quick and efficient.
When you’re driving on a rough road surface, the car constantly leans on different sides and we get motion sickness or dizzy feeling. But you can count on these shocks to reduce that movement as much as possible by maintaining a proper balance between the shocks and the wheels.

How long do shocks and struts last
- Typical life: 50,000–100,000 miles. Heavy loads, rough roads, or off‑road use can cut that to 30,000–50,000.
- They wear slowly. Test yearly after 50,000 miles.
- Signs they’re done:
- Extra bounce after bumps or speed humps
- Nose‑dive when braking, rear squat when you gas it
- Steering shake on rough roads
- Cupped tire wear
- Oil leaks on the body of the shock or strut
- Clunks over bumps
- Replace in pairs (front pair or rear pair). Keep the car balanced.
- Plan an alignment after struts. Shocks usually do not need one.
Tip: My work truck tows often. Rear shocks were tired by 40,000 miles. Use matters.
The difference between shocks and struts
I have seen a lot of people confusing one thing for the other. Even though both play their roles in a suspension system, the shocks and struts are quite different. They are widely used as similar words but you can easily distinguish them based on their purpose.
Shock absorbers tackle the movement of the car using resistance and converting kinetic energy into thermal energy. The struts function almost similarly in the suspension system but their purpose is to ensure stability and control of the car by keeping the tires in an aligned position.
- What they do (both): Control bounce. Keep the tire on the road. Make the ride stable.
- Shock:
- Damps spring motion only
- Does not hold the car up
- Easier swap on many trucks and SUVs
- Strut:
- Structural part of the suspension
- Often holds the coil spring
- Affects alignment (camber/caster)
- Needs an alignment after install
Think of a shock as a helper. Think of a strut as a main pillar.
Anyway, let’s see the table which represents these two parts and their differences.
Field of performance | Shocks | Struts |
---|---|---|
Main part of the suspension system | No | Yes |
Reducing oscillation and bounce movements | Yes | Yes |
Part of the steering system | No | Yes |
Ability to change from strut to shock and from shock to strut | No | No |
Price range category | Belongs to the ‘’affordable’’ | Belongs to the ‘’expensive’’ |

Bryan, Hi. My name is Doug and I trying resolve a noise problem on my 1998 Chrysler Town and Country. (275,000 mi.)
Runs great and drive it quite often.
Noise is this. When maneuvering in a parking lot a creaking sound comes from the front while turning the wheels left or right. I had my trusted mechanic check it out. All suspension parts are good. Power steering is good. CV’s good. He said it comes down to the bearings on top of the struts. I have MasterPro struts with only 16 months of use. He also said that there could be plastic bearings used in the top bearing plate and that could be the source of the annoying sound.
I’m thinking of replacing the struts with Monroe struts. What do you think of this problem? Thank you.
Changing struts could be a solution. At first, you should disconnect the strut and check it out the bearings of it okay or not. Say your mechanic to check it out it’s okay or not. You can also check it out of replacing with monroe. Have a good day. Thanks.
