I recently purchased the mx4 for my 2017 Ram and did a Midwest tour for the most part it performed well until Iowa. Being from California I forgot about monsoon season where a rain test goes above and beyond. The rubber seals had slight leaking, but the framed panels leaked as well as the hinge points. The channel also filled to capacity and dumps water down the tailgate and back into the bed. The foam seal that is issued with the kit is open cell foam which also leaks and will hold water for extended lengths of time. I changed the seal to rubber and used contact adhesive at the cab rail. The product works well for out of site security, keeping sunlight and debris out of the bed, and light rain or carwash moisture out of the bed. It was easy to install by myself (I used Vise grip c clamps and wood block to hold rails tight while securing pressure clamps), as well as easy to remove from truck (to replace the seal at the cab rail).
I have an Mx4 which is my third bakflip cover. Really liked the first cover I had probably about 12 years ago on my First Ridgeline. It lasted well for the three years I had it. My 2nd one also was pretty good and and I had that one longer (about 4 years). On that one I had to put do some riveting and replace stripped screws and failed rivets sometime after the 3 year mark. Fast forward to my new RAM truck in 2016 and a new MX4 cover. Cover started leaking within 6 months (springtime) not bad but definitely had drips inside several spots. Probably should have sent cover back at that point but the leaks were not bad enough to really complain and only happened in heavy rain. Fast forward through about 4-7 years to current time. Leaking got progressively worse heading into year 5 and cover progressive has gotten heavier. Apparently the unsealed frames has allowed enough water leakage over the years that has been absorbed by what appears to be standard polystyrene open cell foam in the sandwich. The foam in the cover has soaked up all the water leaking through over the years and now the whole lid is saturated and weighs 3-4 times what it did before! I think the extra weight has caused 2 of the 3 locking rails to come completely detached. I am going to have to probably tear the whole cover down and rebuild using closed cell foam in the sandwich. For the price it seems like some cheap design decisions were made in using open cell foam, using cheap plastic covers over the pull cords (they have all shattered over the last 3 years) and the lack of caulking or sealing the frames allowing the water to soak into the foam.
Due to the issues over the last 6 years this will likely be my last Bacflip.
