If you’ve ever noticed the malfunction indicator light (MIL) on your dashboard, it’s time to check if everything is alright. The MIL is basically your car asking for help.

The only way to understand what’s going on is to use the OBD2, your vehicle’s built-in self-diagnostic system.

When you visit your mechanic he will use an OBD2 scanner to diagnose the issue, connecting the reader to the 16 pin connector near your steering wheel.

This lets him read OBD2 codes, also known as Diagnostic Trouble Codes (or DTCs), allowing the mechanic to review and troubleshoot the issue quicky.

   On some the connector may be located in the center console or someplace else. If you cannot locate the OBD 2 diagnostic connector, refer to your vehicle owner’s manual.
   
2. Plug in your code reader or scan tool.
3. Turn the ignition ON, but do not start the engine. This is usually necessary so the scan tool can communicate with your car’s computer.
4. Depending on the scan tool you are using, push the READ CODES button or select the READ CODES option on the tool menu.
   
   Note: some scan tools do not automatically recognize the model of your vehicle. You will first have to enter this information before the scan tool will read any fault codes.
5. Your scan tool should display any diagnostic fault codes that are present in numerical order. It’s very important to write down the code, especially or later reference
6. You can not safely clear (erase) the codes by pressing the CLEAR CODES button or choosing the erase code option on the scan tool menu.
7. Very important: Most codes do not tell you what part to replace, only that a problem has occurred in a particular sensor circuit or system.
   
   Further diagnostics will usually be necessary to diagnose the faulty part that needs to be replaced to fix your problem.
8. Clearing the codes does not make the problem go away. If the problem is still present, sooner or later the Check Engine Light will come back.

The code 7E8 means that Your Chevy is facing fuel or air intake issues.

If You’re getting an engine code 7E8 on Your Ford, that’s going to intake there’s an issue with the fuel/air intake combo.

This will often be paired with a code P1326, which is a code for the Engine Fuel and Air Metering Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor.

While you should look at that sensor first, oftentimes this code is going to be thrown for the knock sensor.

Some signs that this is faulty will be if you hear engine knocking and pinging, or if the engine doesn’t seem to accelerate properly when you put the pedal down.

You can usually pick up a compatible one, and if this is the issue, the trouble codes will clear after you’ve installed it.

5. What does 7E8 mean to Hyundai?

This code flashes if there’s a leak in the Evaporative Emission Control System of the Hyundai particularly in the evaporative canister.

However, this code is indicative of a small leak in the evaporative emission canister and not a large one.

This emission control device or canister traps vapors from fuel evaporation and sends them to the fuel tank for later use.

This prevents environmentally harmful vapors from entering the atmosphere and increases the fuel mileage of a tank of fuel. If there’s a leak, the check engine light will illuminate.

It is advisable to get it replaced fast, as leakage may be responsible for a fire hazard.

6. What does 7E8 mean to Jeep?

7E8 and 7E9 are sub menus for the Engine and Transmission. You need to select one and press enter. It will then give you the code for that sub menu.

7. What does 7E8 mean to Mercedes?

It’s asking you to choose between the Engine module and Transmission module to start scanning for a problem.

What has to be done from here is to have the fault codes read out/checked using a fully compatible scan tool or computer plugged into your vehicle’s data port.

That tool can read all the computers in your model. Once this has been performed there should be at least one fault code set in one of the vehicle’s computers.

This code is then diagnosed which will then lead to the cause for this issue and once the cause is located it can be repaired from there to resolve this fault.

If the engine and transmission are operating properly with this issue then most likely it is a sensor or component on the engine or transmission that is not affecting how they operate.

These codes are not OBD2 error codes.

They are menus of systems that can be accessed. You should be able to select or click on the menu code to get to a new window with OBD2 codes and/or interpretations.
