A growing environmental consciousness, evolving technology, and new business opportunities are expanding parking’s role as a transformative force for sustainable mobility in our cities, campuses, entertainment venues, and elsewhere.

Enter Parksmart—formerly Green Garage Certification—the world’s only rating system designed to advance sustainable mobility through smarter parking structure design and operation. Developed by industry experts, the Parksmart framework guides projects toward innovative, solutions-oriented strategies.

Parksmart offers a lifetime of returns for parking structures through reduced operational costs, increased energy efficiency, and better lighting and ventilation. Parksmart is the world’s only certification system designed to advance sustainable mobility through smarter parking structure design and operation. Parksmart complements LEED and other certifications and is administered by Green Business Certification, Inc (GBCI).

The Parksmart program awards points to new and existing parking structures that it says are forward-thinking and sustainable in three categories: innovation, management, and programs and technology structure design. The program employs 48 measures across these three categories. These measures include, among others, parking pricing, access to mass transit, storm water management, energy-efficient lighting, traffic flow, and inclusion of electric charging stations.

Eligibility

Certification is open to both new and existing structured parking facilities of all types including commercial, university, municipal, hospital, retail, and hospitality. Projects can be stand-alone, or a part of a mixed-use building. All are welcome. Projects have five years to complete certification and may submit measures all at once, or work toward certification over time.

New construction projects, or projects that were completed and commissioned within two years of registration, are eligible to achieve Bronze, Silver or Gold certification. They must earn a minimum of 20 points in each of the three main certification categories.

Existing projects are those completed and commissioned more than two years prior to registration. They must earn a minimum of 15 points in each of the three main certification categories.
